The Role

Job Purpose

1. Reliability Culture: Act as a coordinator of reliability for the assets, influencing at all levels to increase focus on understanding and eliminating root causes of unreliability. Understand and build knowledge of the asset Reliability Management Framework.

2. Reliability Centered Maintenance: Work as an RCM facilitator/ practitioner. Extract maintenance data from CMMS, analyzing asset hierarchy, co-ordination with SMEs and other stakeholders, identify failure modes and consequences, cost vs risk analysis and identifying proper recommendations. Using online RCM tools and recommendation management portals.

3. Risk and Reliability Management: Learn the Manage Equipment Care (MEC) process.

Maintain schedule for maintenance strategy reviews and conduct the review based on Risk & Reliability Management principles with tools such as PM Optimization (PMO), REM strategy reviews, RCM and PM Library where applicable. Coordinate in implement condition-based maintenance (CBM) approach and condition monitoring (CM) strategies where appropriate.

4.Reliability and Availability Improvement: Utilize reliability engineering tools (RAM, FMEA, reliability modeling, Weibull analysis, etc.) to identify and understand threats to reliability and availability. Apply RCA techniques to understanding and eliminating those threats with guidance from Senior reliability engineers. Prior knowledge and hands-on usage of some tools is desired.

5. Management of Change: Understand and help to track progress of any changes (PM routines, procedural/process changes, etc.) through the MOC process as required to improve reliability performance. Understanding of MOC process is desired.

6.Root Cause Analysis:

Participate in Root Cause Analysis or Causal Learning Investigations as necessary to support reliability improvement or at the direction of asset leadership/senior reliability engineers. Develop strong skills for RCA methodologies, particularly 5-Why and Causal Learning. Data Analysis and automation: Act as the custodian of reliability and maintenance data, using existing systems to monitor and report KPIs, as well as identify bad actors and threats to reliability using reliability engineering tools. Basic use of data automation tools.

7.Spare/Material Management: Participate in periodic reviews on critical spares, min/max inventory levels, Material Master coding and support on list of materials creation and upload into CMMS.

Also help to develop understanding of linking the material management with Maintenance to identify the source of requirements and bring down the overall maintenance cost by optimizing inventory/material cost.


Financial Dimensions

In partnership with Process Managers and stakeholders, can demonstrate the advantages of structured and detailed maintenance strategy for the equipment within their appointed sites, plants and locations or OUs.

Business Dimensions

Perform reliability engineer role and other technical functions, with scope covering technical data and documents of the operating units, manufacturing sites, chemical plants, supply chain and distribution locations.

This role is expected to help rotating equipment engineers in implementing the standard maintenance strategy for preventive/corrective maintenance of various equipment uniformly in various operating units across the globe.

- Develop good understanding and building skills as per the Reliability engineer’s competancy.

- Help and coordinate with the Senior Reliability engineers, various activities for analyzing gaps and improving reliability of the assets.

- Working with dedicated assets to understand the requirements and helping them identify gaps with the guidance from senior reliability engineers.

- Steep learning curve to develop skills for various reliability tools is high desireable.

- Constantly engage with site maintenance leads, original equipment manufacturers,

vendors and conduct reliability studies in consultation with site maintenance personnel/senior reliability engineers.

- Interact and communicate with the site focal for reliability studies and maintenance strategies, understanding the intricacies about how the actual maintenance activities for heavy duty rotating equipment and other machinery have been planned and performed in various Units of Shell.

- Understanding the functions of the various equipment and instruments and thorough knowledge of reading/ interpreting the engineering drawings (P&IDs;, PEFS, PFDs).

- Managing stakeholders/ representatives of various operating units through effective communication and identifying & resolving the bottlenecks for data analysis, maintaining issue logs and use the same in implementing changes/improvements in the processes.

- Multidiscipline meeting for RCM analysis,

analyzing failure causes, complete RCM study and generate report.

- Confidence to work in virtual environment and managing engagement across different levels of stakeholders, including senior management for day to day operations. Includes initiative to identify and help resolve business and technical issues within areas of responsibility.

- Sound understanding of business/process workflow and having mature mindset to deal and behave under tough/challenging situations.

- Strong proficiency in using English for both spoken and written communication, as well as using Office Communicator, Instant Messaging, Video Conferencing, Outlook, etc.

- Shift work following operating hours of the production sites, manufacturing sites,

chemical plants, supply chain and distribution location.

- Resilient under pressure and able to work with people different culture and working style.

- Willing to travel to various operating units/sites across the globe as per requirements.

- A self-starter leader and reliable deliverer, with very good verbal and written skills in English, able to negotiate with people, and able to resist undue influence that might otherwise compromise integrity of data quality.

- Exposes the individual to all cultural backgrounds and organizational levels, across diverse time zones.

Data analysis techniques/Tools that can include:

- RCM tools (wIMS/ Meridium/ RCM III).

- RBI / SIS.

- Reliability modeling and prediction

- Fault Tree Analysis

- Weibull Tree Analysis

- Six Sigma (6)


- Root-cause and Root-Cause Failure Analysis (RCA, RCFA)

- Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS)

- Anlaysis tools like Spotfire/ Power Bi.

Works with Production to perform analysis of assets including:

- Asset Utilization

- Overall Equipment Effectiveness

- Remaining useful life

- Other parameters that define operating condition, reliability and costs of assets

- Provides technical support to production, maintenance management and technical personnel.

- Applies value analysis to repair/replace, repair/redesign, and make/buy decisions.

Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Educational background, qualifications and experience typically required to perform the job


Mandatory Requirements: -

- University Degree in Mechanical Engineering full-time university degree.

- Minimum 2+ years of overall working experience in in Oil & Gas/ Petrochemicals with experience in One or more than one of following areas: -

- Design, maintenance, troubleshooting experience and Knowledge of rotating machines such as centrifugal compressor, gas turbine, steam turbine, centrifugal pump, reciprocating compressor, screw compressor, positive displacement pump, Induced/Forced draught fan, cooler fan and blower.

- Experience of reliability studies i.e. Preventive Maintenance Optimization, RAM, RCA, FRACAS, Causal Learning, Life Cycle Analysis.

- Experience of RCM studies. Knowledge of RCM steps, asset criticality analysis, Risk matrix and recommendation management.

- Experience and knowledge in rotating machines performance and health monitoring.

Desirables: -

Experience in Technical Data and Documents management including processes and tools. For example, experience in SAP PM & MM module implementation, skill in MS Office tools like Excel and Access etc.

Experience in leading team/process/projects is highly desirable.

Effective communication skill and stakeholder management is a necessary skill for the job.

Knowledge of Lean CI methodology is desirable.

Able to multi-task, prioritize and ensure delivery of priorities as promised, work without close supervision, and work through others to deliver results.

Virtual working experience is highly desirable.

Professional Engineering certification i.e. CMRP, CRE is an added value.

Proficiency in working with data analysis and automation tools like Spotfire/ Power Bi/ Python shall be an added advantage.
